St Christopher Family Faith Formation

K through 8th Grade Religious Education Programs

Children are more likely to embrace the faith they see lived out each day in their home. Families are domestic churches where we are formed in love, mercy, and faithfulness to God. In today’s culture it is less likely that young people will be supported in their faith outside of the home, which makes strengthening the faith in Catholic families a paramount priority for the Church.

We are pleased to share that beginning this fall our parish’s youth faith formation programs will transition to a family formation model in which children and parents will participate together in catechesis and spiritual growth. Both our sacramental preparation and ongoing faith formation programs will undergo this new format.

This is a transition from the traditional ‘classroom model’ where children are catechized with their peers in an academic school format. The limitation of this approach is that it presumes children will continue their formation in the home, and since many parents have not received a strong spiritual and theological formation themselves, they are limited in their ability to provide support and witness to their children in the home.

The parish is far more effective in forming and educating children when parents are engaged in the process. This new format will be a combination of in-person formation at the parish and homebased lessons and experiences. We will make every effort to ensure that both the time commitment and program content are approachable for busy families.
